About Brenda
I still get the physiological response about how I felt back then, when my kids’ challenges were so overwhelming, it made me feel like I could not do one more thing. If I had to do one more thing, it would not be for me, it would be for my children or family. But, regardless of the self imposed guilt or shame I would feel for doing something for myself, I chose to awaken to find ways to make my own life better.
I started working in Public Special Education in 2003. I wanted to become as knowledgeable as possible to make a difference in the lives of children, and my own. I became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) which greatly helped my understanding of behavior. But over time, it became apparent that there was something missing.
The identification and categorization we see in society can lead to discrimination, social bias and human suffering through the medical model that is in place to identify our children with challenges. It is there for a reason, to establish care and services. But looking at the social model, I started studying the Science of Happiness, Positive Psychology and Social and Emotional Learning to increase my awareness and understanding of looking at what is “right” with you.
I have developed a new awareness for connection, insight and compassion, not only for others, but for myself. I see how we are all more alike than we are different. When we have a positive mindset with a values based “mindful” practice that involves things like insight, awareness, kindness, and gratitude, we can be empowered to become more resilient and to flourish. That’s why I created Grow Your Happy. You will feel empowered and want to share what you have learned with your children, family, friends and community members through this strengths based practice.
Remember, differences, disabilities, and challenges are all a part of the human condition. My intention is for “Grow Your Happy” to provide opportunities for parents to rethink and redefine their current mindset. To develop a new set-point for happiness for themselves and their loved ones, so even when difficulties, and obstacles do arise, they can bounce back better, and live their best life.
